Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis

What is Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis (often referred to as red or pink eye due to the characteristic reddish appearance it causes) is a common eye condition caused by infection or allergies.

Conjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition of the conjunctiva - the thin, transparent layer covering the white of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids.

Although conjunctivitis can look alarming, most cases are mild and resolve on their own or with simple treatment. However, some forms are infective and highly contagious, so proper assessment and diagnosis along with hygiene care are required.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis:

What are the common symptoms of conjunctivitis?

  • bloodshot, redness in one or both eyes
  • itchy, gritty or sore, as if something is in the eye
  • swollen, puffy, watery
  • sensitivity to light
  • thick discharge

Flu-like symptoms may be present at the same time.
