Who can get a free flu vaccine in Ireland?
The HSE provides the flu vaccine free of charge for people who are more likely to become seriously ill if they catch influenza.
Aged 60 or over?
Your flu vaccine is free. Everyone aged 60 years and over is entitled to a free HSE flu vaccine—no medical card is required. For the best protection, book your vaccination from September or November, before flu season reaches its peak.
Living with a long-term health condition?
You'll most likely be covered with us. People living with conditions such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or a weakened immune system are generally entitled to a free flu vaccine. Pregnant?

Vaccinating your child?
Children aged 2–17 years can receive a free flu vaccine. For most children, it's given as a simple nasal spray rather than an injection. It's quick, needle-free and only takes a minute.
Healthcare worker or carer?
You're covered too. Healthcare workers and people who provide regular care for someone who is vulnerable are eligible for a free HSE flu vaccine. Getting vaccinated helps protect both you and the people who depend on your care.
Not eligible for a free vaccine?

When should I get my flu vaccine?
The best time to get vaccinated is September / October or early November.

Can the flu vaccine give you the flu?
No.
The injectable flu vaccine cannot give you flu because it does not contain live influenza virus.
Some people experience mild side effects such as a sore arm, tiredness or a slight temperature for a day or two. These are normal signs that your immune system is responding to the vaccine.
The nasal spray used for children contains a weakened form of the virus that cannot cause flu illness in healthy children.
Can I have other vaccines at the same appointment?
In many cases, yes.
If you're also due a COVID-19 booster, shingles vaccine or another recommended vaccination, speak to our pharmacy team. Where appropriate, several vaccines can often be given during the same visit, saving you an extra trip.
