Common Conditions Service - Conditions Covered

Common Conditions We Can Treat

Green Cross Pharmacy in Killaloe and Castleconnell, Limerick are now offering the Common Conditions Service, a new healthcare service that allows our pharmacists to assess and treat a range of everyday health conditions and where appropriate, prescribe prescription-only medication, all in line with HSE clinical protocols.

This service is designed to make accessing care quicker and more convenient, helping patients get the treatment they need without having to visit a GP for eligible conditions.

WHAT COMMON CONDITIONS ARE COVERED

Our pharmacists can treat eight common conditions currently covered by the service.

1. Shingles

Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. Early treatment is important to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms. Our pharmacists can assess symptoms and provide appropriate treatment where eligibility criteria are met.

Please note there is a Shingles Vaccine available - Book Online at Green Cross Pharmacy

2. Impetigo

Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection, most commonly seen in children but also affecting adults. It often appears as red sores or blisters around the nose and mouth. Pharmacist assessment allows for prompt treatment and advice on preventing spread.

3. Cold Sores

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and typically appear around the lips or mouth. Early treatment can help reduce healing time and discomfort. Pharmacists can assess and provide suitable prescription treatment where appropriate.

5. Vulvovaginal Thrush

Vulvovaginal thrush is a common fungal infection that causes itching, soreness, and discharge. Pharmacists can provide discreet consultations and appropriate treatment for eligible patients.

6. Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Uncomplicated UTIs are common, particularly in women, and symptoms may include burning when passing urine, urgency, or lower abdominal discomfort. Following assessment, pharmacists may prescribe treatment without the need for a GP visit, where criteria are met.

7. Acute Infective Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an infection or inflammation of the eye that can cause redness, discharge, and irritation. Pharmacists can assess whether symptoms are suitable for treatment under the Common Conditions Service or if further care is required.

8. Allergic Rhinitis and Allergic Conjunctivitis

Allergic conditions such as hay fever and allergy-related eye symptoms can significantly affect daily life. Pharmacists can assess symptoms and provide appropriate prescription treatments where applicable.
